This impressive construction dating from the period of Hadrian (approx. AD 120) connected the Temple des Eaux (Water Temple), a fountain in Zaghouan, with the city of Carthage over a distance of 123km. Restored on several occasions, the aqueduct slips in and out of view of the modern road. The arches are sometimes just above ground level - when they have not completely disappeared, given that the channelling system was occasionally underground - and sometimes far more visible and impressive, such as the section running for several kilometres on the approach to Oudna. The water channel is still visible on the top as if the aqueduct was ready to resume operations at any time.
