The Jefferson Memorial, which is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, pays homage to the nation's third president. The white marble monument with a spectacular dome calls to mind the style of Monticello, Jefferson's residence in Virginia. The sculpted pediment features the great man surrounded by the authors of the Declaration of Independence. Inside, a bronze statue (5.7m) by Rudulph Evans shows the president holding in his hand a parchment of this founding text.
