The Mall serves as the cultural heart of the capital and a political forum for the nation. Its imposing buildings and broad vistas underscore Washington's reputation as "the City Beautiful". The broad greensward extends west from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, and is home to many of the nation's revered memorials and excellent public museums. Traditionally a rallying point for political demonstrations, the Mall also hosts major national events such as the annual Independence Day celebration.
