The centre of Mexico is dotted with a chain of volcanoes including the Nevado de Toluca - or Xinantécatl. Rising to a height of 4,690m at the Pico del Fraile, it is the 4th highest peak in the country. You can hike up to the summit from Moon Lake, whose iridescent waters stretch out at the bottom of the crater, along with Sun Lake. The panoramic view from there looks out over two more volcanoes rising up to the west: Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Allow 3hr to get there and back, and pick a nice day to enjoy it even more!
