Regularly used on market days, the covered market in St-Pierre-sur-Dives draws attention on account of its fine appearance. Destroyed by fire in 1944, it was entirely and faithfully rebuilt. The oak timberwork is held together with 290 000 hand-made chestnut dowels. You won't find a nail here, or a bolt: even the roof tiles are fixed in this way! As a matter of interest, if the tiles were piled on top of each other, they would reach the height of the Puy-de-Dôme (1 465m).
