The Palácio do Catete (1857), the former presidential palace, served as the home to 18 successive heads of state between 1897 and 1960. On the first floor there is a private chapel, a banquet hall (with its table laid), a concert hall with a superb inlaid floor and a remarkable Moorish room. The former bedroom of President Vargas has been left untouched since his suicide in 1954. The floor previously given over to private apartments now houses a permanent exhibition on the subject of the presidency (photos, various artefacts). The venue regularly hosts classical music concerts.
