This Augustinian Canon monastery was founded in 1504 and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the late 17C. The prior wished the abbey church to bear as strong a resemblance as possible to St Peter's in Rome, hence its unusually imposing size for such a small community. The frescoes of the cupola and the nave are by Matthias von Görz. A palette of lively colours, a taste for light and a mastery of trompe-l'oeil are the main characteristics of his art.
