Designed by architect Carlos Ott, this immense building was inaugurated on 14 July 1989. Two auditoria, one of which seats 2,700, together with the combination in a single building of all the skills necessary to stage an opera (74 in all, from a bootmaker to sound technician) explain the size of the building, which is where all the stage sets are designed and stored. Berlioz' Troyens kicked off the venue's first artistic season in March 1990.
