This circular "square" ringed with large hotels, is Lisbon's nerve centre where several wide avenues converge. In the centre, amid the heavy traffic, stands a monument to the Marquis of Pombal. Inscriptions around the base of the pedestal recall the major achievements of this great man who was King José 1's Prime Minister.
