These elegant streets are lined with old-fashioned shop fronts, now home to Portugal's top fashion designers. There are also well known bookshops, patisseries and cafés. The most famous of these is A Brasileira once frequented by the poet, Fernando Pessoa. Since the centenary of his birth in 1988, a bronze statue of the poet, in a pensive mood, has been placed at one of the tables on the terrace.
