Begun in the 17C, the church was never completed. In the form of a Greek cross, it is now surmounted by a cupola, inaugurated in 1966. The local expression "like work on Santa Engrácia" is commonly used to describe projects that are never finished! It is now the national Pantheon with the cenotaphs of great Portuguese men whose names are linked with the glorious era of the Great Discoveries: Camões, Henry the Navigator and Vasco de Gama, etc.
