This museum was designed to house the exceptional collection of Calouste Gulbenkian, an art lover born in 1869, who bequeathed his fortune to Portugal on his death in 1955. It includes Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman antiques, Oriental, Far-Eastern and European artworks. The latter part opens with medieval sacred art then continues with paintings and sculptures from the 15C to 19C and Art Nouveau pieces by René Lalique. Temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
