Sir William Bruce built Earlshall in 1546, and Robert Lorimer had it restored in 1891. Carried out between 1617 and 1620, the painted ceiling of the second-floor gallery is interesting; its black and white decor includes the coat of arms of Bruce, and of Scottish royalty and noblemen, as well as a large number of animals linked together with geometrical patterns. The superb gardens around the castle were laid out according to a design by Robert Lorimer (17C) in 1890.
