The building dates back to the end of the 15C; the great hall, with its sculpted enclosure, has changed considerably since it was built. The fantasy author, Bulwer-Lytton, transformed it into a Gothic masterpiece with a cupola; this style can be seen in particular on the chimney towers, painted panels and stained-glass windows in the large ceremonial room. The gardens and parkland will be especially popular with younger visitors.
