With fewer old monuments than the citadel, the modern town of Hué stands on the opposite bank of the river and is home to shops, hotels, restaurants and a few colonial-style buildings. Its narrow streets make for a pleasant stroll, leading to a number of interesting religious buildings such as the tranquil Bao Quoc pagoda, Tu Dam pagoda, one of the country's cradles of Buddhism, and the interesting Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde cathedral.
