The basilica is nothing short of astonishing. Its left side is in the Gothic style, and the right side Renaissance. This highly unusual state of affairs can be explained by the fact that in the 16C, following the partial destruction of the building, the reconstruction was based on the Gothic plans of an old master combined with the Renaissance plans of a young architect. Inside, note the large number of pillars and, in the lower part of the nave, the fine Renaissance decoration.
