The plan of the Roman city of Dougga seems to have been dictated by the steep slope and by the former Numidian presence here, given that the layout does not conform to that of a typical Roman town. During the period of its greatest splendour, Dougga was home to an astonishing concentration of temples and public buildings with little concern for perspective. In the same way, its streets hug the often steep slope by following a winding trajectory. Spread across a hill surrounded by fields of wheat and olive trees, the ruins of Dougga, the most beautiful in Tunisia, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
