The only major museum in America's Southwest devoted to African-American history, art and culture, the African American Museum occupies a remarkable ivory stone building (1993, Arthur Rogers). With a 20m dome, it follows the shape of a 12C Ethiopian Orthodox cross and its design motifs symbolise pre-industrialised African cultures. Around a rotunda, there is a selection from the Billy R. Allen Folk Art Collection, considered one of the best contemporary collections in the US.
