Sky City is the historic section of the pueblo of Acoma. Perched atop a sandstone bluff (360ft), this is the oldest inhabited village in the States (11C). Many Native Americans settled here after the Pueblo revolt of 1680 and some 50 people still live here throughout the year, despite the lack of amenities. On 2 September, the village celebrates the festival of San Esteban with the harvest dance, while the San Esteban del Rey mission (1629-40) is particularly picturesque at Christmas when the village is lit by luminarias.
