The pleasant hilly slopes that dominate the Ribeiro Frio (the "cold river"), rich in plant life, are part of the Flora da Madeira Forest. The spot is the departure point for walks that skirt the Levada da Serra do Faial. The Levada do Furado, which irrigates a section of these slopes as far as Porto da Cruz and Mechico, runs to the Ribeiro Frio.
