For safety reasons, tourists are advised not to travel to the region. Koobi Fora, to the north of Lake Turkana, is a major fossil-bearing archaeological site. It was here that the 1.9 million year-old skull of Homo habilis was excavated. Koobi Fara is protected by the Sibiloi National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Small museum on the site.
