Pan Gate

Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Perfectly restored to how it originally looked when built by the Yuan dynasty (1276-1368), this gate provided the town with effective protection from attack by land and water. Its features include a double portcullis system to protect its granite gates, crenellations defended by cannons (Qing dynasty) and a watchtower. The 19C Wumen bridge, built from granite, is the tallest in Suzhou, enabling sailing boats to pass beneath it.
