Historic Plovdiv is rich in surprises, among which the church of St Paraskeva jutting out on a rocky outcrop, whose detached bell tower is one of the most iconic monuments of the city. Affectionately known as the "old church" by the locals, this 1830's-edifice is home to lovely icons.
