  The Michelin Guide's review
When standing in front of these ruins, it's difficult to imagine the size of Wat Mahatat, situated in the heart of a man-made island on which ancient Ayutthaya once stood, although the base of the prang (which must have been 50m high) provides some idea of their scale. The beautiful gold objects found on the site are now exhibited in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. A few chedi have survived the sacking of the site by the Burmese, but the highlight here is without a doubt the impressive head of the imprisoned Buddha, surrounded by the roots of a tree.
