Tobalá brings Oaxacan-inspired cooking and a focused mezcal and cocktail program to Riverdale. The dining room is modern and dimly lit, with clay masks, pottery and design elements that nod to Oaxaca without overt theming. House-made blue and yellow corn tortillas are served with salsa verde and chile de arbol, anchoring a menu built around regional dishes. Tacos de barbacoa feature lamb served simply on corn tortillas, while enmoladas de pato are finished with a dark mole negro incorporating fruit, chiles and spice, reflecting a more traditional expression of the cuisine.
