This memorial pays tribute to the 72,000 British and South African soldiers who lost their lives in the Somme between 1915 and 1918. The largest British war memorial in the world features a 45m-high memorial brick arch, designed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. The site is also home to the Historial of the Great War - Thiepval Museum, which displays 600 portraits of the "missing of the Somme" and two military cemeteries (French and British).
